Herefordshire 4x4 Response is a volunteer organisation made up of experienced 4×4 vehicle owners. We provide essential transport and logistical support during severe weather, emergencies, and situations where normal vehicles cannot operate.
We assist emergency services, local authorities, the NHS, charities, and other recognised organisations across Herefordshire.
Requests for support must come from an organisation, not directly from members of the public. If you represent an organisation and require help, please email us at enquiries@herefordshire4x4response.org. Include your name, organisation, the type of support needed, and when and where assistance is required. All requests are assessed and prioritised to ensure help is provided where it is most needed.
In urgent or life-threatening situations, the public should always contact emergency services first by calling 999 or NHS 111. Herefordshire 4x4 Response cannot accept emergency calls directly

The group was established by a team of volunteer drivers from a local Land Rover club in response to widespread and severe flooding across Herefordshire and the surrounding region.
Using their own 4×4 vehicles, volunteers provided essential transport and logistical support when normal road access was impossible.
The team’s bravery and commitment were formally recognised later that year with a Pride of Herefordshire Award.
During heavy snowfall in December 2010, around 30 volunteer drivers played a vital role in supporting the county.
Responders transported essential NHS staff, including doctors and district nurses, often working six to seven hours at a time in hazardous conditions.
The group was placed on standby for West Midlands Ambulance Service and worked closely with Herefordshire Council’s emergency planners, strengthening its role as a trusted emergency support partner.
On 28 May 2013, Herefordshire 4x4 Response was officially incorporated as a private company limited by guarantee, providing a formal structure for governance, insurance, training, and partnership working while remaining entirely volunteer-led.
The “Beast from the East” brought prolonged and disruptive snow and ice to Herefordshire, significantly impacting communities across the county.
This period became one of the group’s longest and most demanding deployments, with sustained operations over several days to support key workers and essential services.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the group adapted rapidly to support community resilience, assisting with the movement of key workers, supplies, and essential services when required.
Fundraising efforts during this period proved critical to the group’s long-term sustainability.
In 2024, the team purchased RV1, its dedicated response vehicle, using funds raised during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The acquisition of RV1 marked a major milestone, enhancing the group’s operational capability and readiness.
Throughout the year, the team also responded to multiple flooding and severe weather incidents, continuing to support NHS staff and partner organisations across Herefordshire as extreme weather events became more frequent.
Ongoing Support: The organisation continues to operate 24/7, 365 days a year, assisting Herefordshire Council, NHS, Fire & Rescue, Police, and Search & Rescue teams during adverse weather conditions or other emergencies.
