Radio appeal - Saturday 30th Jan 2021
Our Training Officer, Bob Miles, joined Andrew Easton's Saturday Breakfast show on BBC Hereford &
Worcester, requesting help with our equipment storage at 08:53am….. thanks Andrew! Much
appreciated to being given some “airtime” when we are very likely to be called out again due to
floods, particularly around Ledbury. The interview can be listened to below:-
Within minutes of the interview, Bob was mobilised as Controller for the group, to arrange collection of
a District nurse stranded at home by floodwater in Ledbury, needing to get to patients in Colwall when
we responded immediately. Last call of the day was signed off at 20:13 hrs…….
Standby & Call out ! - Sunday 24th Jan 2021
……from 06:50 to 21:30, (during Covid-19 Lockdown #3) due to snow and icy road conditions. Calls were
centred around the movement of Doctors, Nurses, and NHS support staff between Hereford County
Hospital (HCH), from/to Worcester, Kidderminster, and into Wales, whilst District nurses were
accompanied through their daily rounds to ensure patients were provided with their essential daily
medical care. Recommended procedures for Responder and passenger safety were adhered to
throughout with all Responders having been issued detailed instruction in the utilisation and
subsequent safe disposal of potentially infectious PPE. We are grateful to the NHS for providing
additional PPE to our own supplies in what proved to be a very busy day on Sunday. The icy conditions
continued into Monday 25th Jan when we transported dedicated staff to St. Michael’s Hospice. We
attended to 14 specific transportation tasks covering 577 miles over 2 days of very cold weather.
Standby - 21st & 22nd Jan 2021
Our response group were requested to *STANDBY* for the NHS and for Herefordshire Council due to
forecast inclement weather conditions from storm Christoph when we were again treated to flood
conditions in the County with 12 flood alerts and a further 13 flood warnings being issued with river
levels expected to remain high. We continued making a number of journeys into 22nd January.
Christmas Tree Collection & Disposal - 9th Jan 2021
Several (correctly PPE’d!) responder crews were out again this year on Saturday collecting Christmas
trees from householders in and around Hereford from pre-booked donations & appointments arranged
through St. Michael’s Hospice for responsible disposal. This looks like it may well become a “regular
gig” each year. We are always delighted to help St. Michael’s, and hope to do more for them in 2021
and beyond.
